UVIC Course Changes

So there is a lot of talk about what to do with hole #3 at UVIC since it was moved to behind the building from the blackberry trap.  I am partial to moving the basket about 100 feet back from where it currently is  (if you were standing at the new teepad for #3, by the fence looking at the basket), into the hilly field behind getting it away from the teepads for #4, and behind the bike riders.  This changes things a bit and allows us to use one of the old teepads for #3, as well as a new one proposed and currently being used in the end of the apple orchard by the big oak tree.

And also just as important is the placement of the basket for hole #6, which is horrible in winter rain.  So I have proposed moving to the top of the grassy hill behind the current basket position, about 50 feet back from where it is now.  there is nothing in the way, and all we need to do is clear the existing grass, and then as it is used over the next year, the course should maintain itself better than last year and at least the surrounding grass can get trampled better.  It makes for a great shot using the existing teepads, but we also going to make a new tee pad back in the field, near the outer trail ring, that allows for a nice 200 foot drive on this shot, instead of just two of the same shot...

Any input is appreciated and will be listened to, but so far nobody else seems to care so I will be moving the basket for #6 this week.  I have also moved the alternate teepad for #8 back 50 feet into the grass to allow for a longer drive, instead of only using mid range discs.

Re: UVIC Course Changes

Mark - There are course changes in the works for UVic. All these changes must go through the UVic Disc golf club, as they are the stewards of the course. For example, the recent change on hole 8b is currently putting golfers at risk from errant or short shots from hole 7b. Nothing is there to stop us from playing other configurations of the course, just the established and approved teepads/pin positions should be left to the UVic Disc Golf Club. It is paramount that safety for all users in Mystic Vale is placed first. UVic has the course on a trial basis at Mystic Vale and has stated the land there is multi-use, so dog walkers, mountain bikers, and disc golfers have to all get along and do it safely. We are working to hard to get more courses in Victoria w/o risking the only one we have. Your desired changes have been forwarded to Brad for review. Your input is appreciated and your enthusiam is needed in Victoria, be sure to attend the IDGS AGM upcoming in January.

Re: UVIC Course Changes

Hi Doc, good to see you around the forums!  I understand the concern about errant discs on 8B but so far all I have heard from players is that the new shot is more enjoyable to play becuase it avoids the tree-trap that is in the way at the old 8b configuration, allowing the disc to get momentum and height before reaching the trees.  As for dangerous throws, #3 needs to be dealt with as a first priority.  We should consider moving the basket out into the dirt field and move the teepads as well, allowing the players to remain away from the bikers, but removing the risk that is in the current throw, where players at #4a teepad are directly in the way of the basket for #3.

I noticed there are trucks and backhoes out there trying to get dirt out before the rains come.. I would highly recommend asking one of them to move the basket for #6 ASAP before it turns into a mud pit that nobody plays all winter.  I cannot see any reason to NOT move this basket immediately.. anyone?

Thanks for your input on this topic, we need to know more from other players who want to make this course better.

Re: UVIC Course Changes

Mark, you may have missed my point, the course is in a tenuous position at best for even existing at all. We all, therefore must have safety of all users of Mystic Vale in mind and allow the course stewards (UVic Disc Golf Club) to make changes. UVic will not hesitate to pull the course out of the ground. We will then be stuck with nothing but Pay-to Play and poach courses in town! Many of us do agree with needed changes, some that you've pointed out too. I will forward your concerns on to Brad. I have volunteered to help, and your help is appreciated as well;  come on out and wield a shovel and wheelbarrow, looking at mid December for a course work day.
