The trip commenced on friday afternoon as the DiscHeads piled into my Ford Taurus and boogied up to Campbell River to play the 18 hole course there. Campbell River is a nice course, but I found many of the holes could be longer, allowing for more distance shots. I brought this up with a guy who is planning the course redesign during the camping party on Saturday night on Cortez, and he agreed. I guess there are some changes on the way, which I am glad about.
Then we attempted to find hotdogs so we could have a weiner roast on the beach, and campout in Campbell River, but nothing is open on a Friday night in Campbell River past 10:00 !! So we caught the last ferry to Quadra Island at 11:30 and spent a peaceful time on the beach, playing guitar into the wee hours of the morning. We caught the first ferry to Cortez Island and made it in time for the tournament.
The Cortez Island course is unique in its design. The holes are well laid out and challenging with several uphill shots that require a lot of planning to avoid rolling away from the pin. The tonals are 4" posts that have a propane tank stuck on top, painted red. They are visible but they are also very high off the ground, some measuring over 7 feet off the ground. For someone who is used to playing on regular height baskets and tonals, I found it really tough to train my mind to throw that high. I am sure I am not alone in wishing they pout them at normal height from the ground, but the locals say that is part of the uniqueness of the course so I don't think it will change any time soon. I scored a total of 131 (+23) for the tournament, and got -7 in doubles.
On Sunday we played an 18 hole private course at the farm where we had the BBQ the day before, and it was quite a blast. I found a wasp nest on hole 7 and got stung many times, but I wasn't the one who got it the worst; Some poor guy had a swarm of wasps fly up his shorts and sting his pecker into oblivion.
The prize for doubles was this wicked bronze statue of a pointer, and and is it worth some dough. It can't leave the island without a guarantee that it will return for the next year, and we sure hope these guys from Vancouver who won the doubles match have a good time with it for the next year.
